Australia remains one of the top study destinations for international students. However, with changing immigration policies, Assessment (Evidence) Levels have again become a major topic of discussion in 2026.
Recently, the Australian Department of Home Affairs (DHA) updated its evidentiary framework, and India has been placed back into Evidence Level 3. This update has created confusion, fear, and misinformation among students.
We explains the real meaning of Assessment Level 3, what has changed in 2026, and how genuine students can still successfully obtain an Australian student visa.
Australia categorizes countries into different Evidence Levels (Level 1, 2, and 3) based on immigration risk factors such as:
Visa compliance history
Overstay rates
Fraud or document manipulation trends

As per the DHA update dated 08 January 2026:
🇮🇳 India – Evidence Level 3
🇧🇩 Bangladesh – Evidence Level 3
🇳🇵 Nepal – Evidence Level 3
🇧🇹 Bhutan – Evidence Level 3
🇱🇰 Sri Lanka – Evidence Level 2
Being placed in Level 3 means more detailed document verification, not rejection.
This is completely false.
Level 3 does NOT mean:
Australia is closed for Indian students
Visas will be rejected automatically
IELTS / PTE is not needed
Funding proof can be skipped
Unfortunately, some misguiding agents and content creators spread false claims like:
Apply without IELTS / PTE
Funding not required
These shortcuts lead to high refusal rates.
Assessment Level 3 simply means:
✔ More documents required
✔ Stricter financial verification
✔ Closer review of academic background
✔ Very strong and honest GTE / GS statement
Immigration officers and universities carefully check every detail before approving the visa.
A valid English test is mandatory:
IELTS
PTE
Other DHA-accepted tests
English waivers are rare and risky under Level 3.
Students must clearly show:
Tuition fee coverage
Living expenses
Source of funds (income, savings, loans)
Funds must be genuine, traceable, and well-documented.
Your course must:
Match your previous education
Show logical progression
Avoid sudden, unrelated changes
Fake gap explanations or irrelevant courses are high-risk factors.

Why this course & university?
Career plans after studies
